Word Studies
Because the Bible was written in either Hebrew, Greek, or Aramaic (depending on which parts you’re reading), there is sometimes a real benefit when you’re studying it to dig into the major words that the author is using. What did that particular word mean in its fullness to those people? Time to find out!
And what’s great is that you can do a fairly good study on these words online through a website called Blue Letter Bible. Here are some quick instructions, but the best thing will be for you to do some exploring and discovery on your own to see all that’s available to you:
Search at the top for the verse/book you want to look into.
From there you’ll click “Tools” next to the verse that has the word you want to explore. It will open up a number of opportunities for you, one of which is where it shows you the verse broken down in its original language. You’ll see, for an example, that sometimes it takes 3 English words to cover 1 Hebrew word.
Click on the “Strong’s” letter and number combination of the word/phrase you’re studying to have it open up that word in the online Bible dictionary. Here you’ll find the potential treasure trove of information not just including the part of speech, but also how often it’s used, what it’s biblical usage means, and immediate reference to other places that it’s used in the Bible so that you can compare them to help you better understand the word in other contexts.
